The club is run by former British Number One and member of the British Team for ten years, Jo Maynard, and Marc Bengry who has won four Commonwealth Medals. Marc and Jo have 60 years’ fencing experience between them, and have been passing on their knowledge and enthusiasm for the sport by coaching at schools and clubs for the last 13 years.

Jo Maynard

Jo has been fencing for 27 years, starting at the age of 10.

She was British Number One for a total of 4 years and British Team member for 10 years.

She has represented Great Britain at 7 World Championships and 5 European Championships and won Silver at the Commonwealth Championships in 2002.

She also coached the Under 20 Olympic Champion.

Jo appeared in the Bond Movie ‘Die Another Day’ where she had to work with the actors to make sure they looked good with a sword in their hand, and also body doubled for the Bond girl for the more complicated fighting moves.

Having coached at many schools including Westminster (2001-2007) and Wycombe Abbey School (2007-2014). She coaches two after school classes at Shrewsbury House School and St. Georges School, Weybridge.

Jo holds the highest possible coaching qualification for fencing – Level 5 at all three weapons and holds a current DBS check, First Aid and Safe Guarding and Protecting Children Certificates.


Marc Bengry

Marc has been fencing for 38 years, starting at Parkside School at the age of 7 and has now returned to Parkside to coach pupils in the very same venue that he first picked up a sword.

Marc has won 4 Commonwealth medals and competed at both World and European Championships.

He is 5 times British Champion and has coached 38 National Championship medallists.

Marc has been a full time professional coach since 2004 and coaches at prep schools in London and the local area, including: Fulham Prep, Pembridge Hall, Kew College, Shrewsbury House and Cameron House.

He is a level 4 coach in all three weapons, holds a current DBS check, First Aid and Safe Guarding and Protecting Children Certificates.



Between them, Jo and Marc have a combined 64 years’ fencing experience. With over 100 caps for Great Britain and England teams and the experience and success of teaching 61 National Championship medallists there really is no better place to start fencing in Surrey.
